Seraglio Renovation

 2nd November 2018 to ??

Seraglio history

Seraglio

Seraglio is a traditional 18th Century cottage built of Blue Lias Stone which for centuries, has been mined in Keinton Mandeville.  When Mike and Louise first viewed the property in 2018 they knew that it would be their forever home.  They have undertaken a full ''Back to Stone'' restoration including full rewire, new heating system, full internal replaster with breathable lime plaster and addition of a modern Kitchen/Dining Room extension.  There is still lots to do.

Early History

The plot on which Seraglio now stands can be traced as far back as 1754 when it was knows as Sugerloaf Cottage.  In 1773, Obadiah Green sold Sugerloaf Cottage to a local Stonemason, John Higgins, who then built adjoined houses which he left in his will to his 2 Daughters in 1787. In early Victorian times, the 2 houses were jointed and an animal byre to the rear was incorporated into the living space. More recently, the house underwent a complete renovation in the 1970s with several extensions added. Much of this work was un-sympathetic and by the time Mike and Louise bought it in 2018 the house was in a poor state of repair and required considerable renovation.
